"Virtual Chunder" - Gun Control

Gun Control
"Virtual Chunder"

By Joseph Blarghovich

I know first-hand that the vast majority of gun-owners are responsible with their firearms. The recreational purposes for which they are usually used are valid. One of my favorite activities is to shoot trap with the shotgun. Of the countless gun-owners I have known, I have never known anybody to use a gun in (non-war) violence. I believe that the claim that guns are for protection is also valid. As long as people are allowed to use guns, some would-be criminals might just think twice before breaking in to your house. Most people cite crime as the biggest reason for disallowing gun-ownership. But, how many of you *truly* expect that crime would significantly decrease? Perhaps gun-related crimes would, perhaps not. But realize -- and you've heard this before, I'm sure -- that then only criminals would have guns. Disallowing guns would be like taking everyone's phones away to eliminate prank-calls. Maybe that analogy isn't perfect, but I believe it illustrates my point. To illegalize guns would do a great disservice to the millions of responsible gun-owners in this country, and probably wouldn't do much to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Our founding fathers made it a Constitutionally-protected right. To eliminate that right would be to eliminate some of our freedom. And without that, America suddenly isn't America anymore. That is not to say that the founding fathers were perfect or completely correct. That is why they provided for the updating/amending of the Constitution. But the fact remains that there is just too small a percentage of people who abuse their gun rights to revoke the 2nd Amendment and take away those rights from all of us.
