"Virtual Chunder" - Welfare

Welfare
"Virtual Chunder"
January 3, 2006
By Joseph Blarghovich

I believe that the welfare program should not be a means for destitute families to live for free. It should be a means of helping them get on their feet. It confuses me why there is so much debate over this issue...it seems clear. Help people find jobs, give them money to complement their income, and when they are established and set on their way to independence, wean them off of the support. I suppose there is much debate about how to accomplish that, but why so much debate? People should not be buying food with stamps for the rest of their lives. It should be considered a temporary situation to help them support themselves. If people are going to get welfare assistance, and then sit at home all day and not work, then why should the government help them (with our tax money) if they don't want to help themselves?
